Rudjer Glavurtic playing piano

He was born in 1973 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 1994, he entered the Music Faculty in Zagreb (Croatia), department of organ, and he completed it in 1999 as one of the best students of University of Zagreb. During and after his studies he has played several repertoires; from Renaissance and Baroque, to the music of the XX century and contemporary music.

Since 1997 he has studied composition, and some of his compositions were performed in Croatia and abroad at various major music festivals. He has also made several group chamber and solo concerts in Croatia and abroad. The following is a selection of his notable works:

CD “Salamander”, pieces for piano and organ in colaboration with painter Josip Zanki, Zagreb, 1999 and officaly presented on the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2001, several times performed in Bratislava, Wiena, Ptuj, Zagreb and Split.

“The gate of time”, woodwind trio, International Music Festival, Pula, 2002.

“Filius meus”, mixed choir, performed by BBC Singers, World’s Music Days, Maribor, 2003.

“4.44”, improvisation for ogran, tape, singer and three body perccusionists, E-Live, Nikolaai kerk, Utrecht, 2006.

“Jacob’s dream”, performance based on music for solo organ, Theatre Kikker, Utrecht, 2007.

“Course of Dutch” improvisation for piano and voice, and conducting, project Sounds around, Houtzaagmolen de Ster, Utrecht, 2008.

Air conducting (luchtdirigeren), Festival Classique, Den Haag, 2008.

In 2002 he decided to study composition in Utrecht at HKU, under professor Henk Alkema. In 2009 he finished these studies. Next to his studies of composition he started to study more instruments and conducting as a minor subject. Conducting was a remarkable challenge for him; it changed his relation with the music and gave him a new way of perceiving it. He started to do street performances, first with bongos and later conducting performances. Because of that he is known as “the dirigent” in Utrecht. Conducting led to him starting to work more on his body awareness, which he explored through practicing Systema and Body Weather Laboratory. Working at body awareness has practical importance and it is a source of artistic inspiration and expression for him.
